A breeze blew through my curls as I stared out at the marina. My scalp was still a little damp after my shower, and my edges were puffy and curled. I was tempted to slick it back with some gel, but Marina assured me that my hair looked great in its natural state.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t?” she asked as her thumb stroked my hand on the table.

“It’s cold,” I said with a shiver. “Why did you ask for the first available table?”

She shrugged. “We were both hungry, and I think my stomach was threatening the host with how loudly it was growling. Besides, the view is great, and I’m not talking about the water.”

While I was flattered, I still groaned at her comment. “Really? Corny compliments now? You’ve already gotten into my pants.”

“And I want to continue doing so,” she said and pulled away to eat some of the restaurant’s complimentary bread.

She stared shyly at her plate while she slathered butter over the bread.

I could never get over the fact that she looked beautiful without even trying. Even when she was putting an unhealthy amount of butter on her dinner roll, she was breathtaking. I had never seen her so shy yet flirty before, and I remembered meeting her various boyfriends over the years. She never acted like this with them, so it made me feel a little more special in her eyes.

Her leather jacket’s collar hid the hickeys adorning her neck. I winced when I first saw them. I’d need to be more careful next time so that I didn’t leave such visible marks on my skin. The hickeys on my neck were a little harder to see because of my darker skin. Being black had its perks.

“What are you thinking about?” Marina asked.

“That I need to leave hickeys on not so visible places on your skin,” I said without thinking, and she blushed.

“We just left the house, Jasmine, and you’re still thinking about it?” she asked with a sigh.

I grinned. “Technically, we left the shower. Why wouldn’t I be thinking about it? You’re hot and really good in bed.”

She didn’t say anything.

“I was also thinking that you’re beautiful and how lucky I was to have you,” I added, and that drew her attention.

She studied me for a minute before looking away.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Nothing, just…” she trailed off and focused on her bread again.

“Tell me,” I said. “We have no reason to be awkward around each other. We’ve known each other for years.”

“I know,” she said. “It’s so weird that this is normal for us now.”

I frowned. “How do you mean?” I hope she wasn’t having second thoughts about us.

“We were roommates, then best friends, and now we’re lovers. It makes me wonder about all the years that could have been,” she said with a sigh. She leaned back in her chair and refused to look me in the eyes.

“I remember how much I disliked Lisa, and I thought it was because that I felt you were ignoring me for her.
